W Burnside, 1934

Today’s photo from 1934 is an “after” image to yesterday’s “during” image of the West Burnside widening project. The vantage point is very similar, looking west from 6th Avenue. Some buildings on both sides had their facades moved back to make room for a wider street. In the case of the Scott Hotel, it was removed entirely, leaving the lot at the far left empty even today.

W Burnside & Broadway, 1933

The West Burnside widening project appears to be at its peak in this 1933 photo looking west through the intersection with Broadway. The 1910 Lowengart building is losing quite a bit of its north face to make way for the street. On the left, the top two floors of the Scott Hotel have already been removed and the ground floor is not far behind.

Pickle Shop, c1931 – Help Us Out!

This may be one of our toughest mysteries yet. This pickle shop is very well stocked and organized but unidentified, either with a name or location. Hard to tell if it’s a stand-alone shop or part of an open-air market. As we’ve learned in the past, this might not be in Portland at all so don’t limit your investigation. Good luck once again.

Rose City Waffle House, c1905

Portland loved waffles over a century ago as this early turn-of-the-century photo indicates. This building was originally the “Old Crosby House,” built in 1848 or 1849, the first frame residence in Portland. It was located on the east side of SW 4th Avenue between Yamhill and Taylor.

2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

About 55,000 tourists visit Liechtenstein every year. This blog was viewed about 900,000 times in 2012. If it were Liechtenstein, it would take about 16 years for that many people to see it. Your blog had more visits than a small country in Europe!

Portland Aerial Panorama, 1965

Portland stretches out from the west side to Mt. Hood in the distance in this nice 1965 aerial photo. It was a dynamic time for the city; I-5 was under construction in Northeast and North Portland and Lloyd Center and the Memorial Coliseum were recently completed. On the west side, the South Auditorium Urban Renewal District had leveled South Portland but demolition had not yet begun for I-405. The Marquam Bridge piers take shape crossing the Willamette.
