Looking south on Polk. Would walk that way every morning to Roosevelt. Lived one block north from 70-73, across the street from the old Steinfeld pickle factory. Very noisy and stinky during the summer. My hungover father in scivvies went over and yelled at them one hot Sunday morning. Mr. Seinfeld himself hand delivered a case of assorted pickles and relishes.
Almost bought the house for $12,000 in 1973. Just sold last year for $360.000.
If the location on this post is correct, things are very strange today…the fire hydrant and curved corner look alright but the house has been modified considerably. The large tree doesn’t fit and the houses behind & beyond the corner house don’t look like the ones in today’s photo and I can’t read the street sign. So?

1964 and the old style blue and white street signs are still there. Thats about as late as i’ve ever seen them still being there.
Greg; at one time Seinfeld was a small pickle Co. that manufactured out of a house in SW Portland, between 4th & 5th on College; next to a Safeway Grocery Store. Hated the smell of the Dill Pickle Barrels drying outside in the summer sunshine as I walked by in the mid – late 1950’s. Then with the encroaching (Stadium) 405 Freeway they moved, never knew where, but I do now thanks to your posting.
Yes, the same father who was the district manager for Golden Eagle service stations we talked about a couple of weeks ago. He was a multi-faceted man.
He was also a Pearl Harbor survivor. That explains a lot.
Need to agree with wploulorenziprince, the current google picture is not the same corner as the original picture
Dig that ‘49 Hudson and behind it, that Bullet Nosed Studebaker. 🙂
Thanks Viking58, I didn’t know that. Here’s a great story on the history of the Steinfeld family. I had no idea the factory burned down.
