  1. The google map view in 2019.

Does anyone know if it remains vacant? Or when Superior moved out, or what else has occupied it? Seems like a solid little building with cute commercial potential in the St. John’s neighborhood.

  2. That looks like a 1962 Buick Invicta.

It’s too bad that the food store lost its nicely arched glass windows above the front door. The awning helped keep “openers” and customers dry when entering in the rain.

  3. There is not a lot of information that I found about this building which Portland Maps dates to 1907. New archives show that Superior Foods occupied the building from at least 1935 until 1970 and perhaps longer.
The building was likely built a a neighborhood market and was listed for sale in 1924.

Oregonian April 11, 1924—–FOR SALE BY OWNERS
Combination grocery store and meat market, located about 8 blocks from St. Johns proper; averaging about $125 per day; fixtures and stock will inventory about $4000; this is one of the best locations in St. Johns; reason for selling, owners leaving town. 901 S. Jersey st. Corner of Polk st.

  4. Per Portland Maps, it’s being used for a residence. Also, those nice doors, sidelights and windows are probably just covered up. That’s usually the case, as it’s the cheapest.

  5. I suspect from the window treatment that the building has been converted to a private residence. At one time, the city ruled that if a non-conforming use like the Superior Grocery Building was not functioning as a business for a time, say three to five years, the building may not be used for a commercial enterprise again.

  6. There something strange about posting a comment on Tuesday. I posted a comment on this building yesterday AM but it never appeared, just like a Tuesday May 30th. comment I made appeared much later.

  7. My wife grew up just 2 1/2 blocks from this intersection. Up until about two years ago, it was the used for the offices of Leo Kahn, a CPA and his partner, Halle Fische.
