NE 82nd & Sandy, 1934

We’ve seen this view looking north on NE 82nd Avenue as it crosses Sandy back in 1928. This photo, taken from almost the exact same spot six years later, shows a much improved 82nd Avenue, but it looks like the paving ends a few blocks north, maybe at Prescott?

  1. Looking south from this point the Shriners Hospital would be on the left, southeast corner. My grandparents lived a few blocks from here.

  2. There are some survivors! The two houses you can view through the trees are still there on 82nd, just north of the Howard Johnsons. They are much closer to the curbside on 82nd than they used to be though.

  3. I think you’re right about the paving ending at Prescott. From this 1946 Map, the Portland city limits in this area ran north from Sandy and 82nd up to Prescott and then west along Prescott. I seem to recall another photo from around this time showing the improvements in curbs and paving ending at the city limits on Stark as well.

  4. Love the old white wooden direction signs, especially “Point East”. We still have some of those type of signs here in The Dalles.
