Downtown, 1915

A bird’s eye view of SW 5th Avenue and the surrounding area, including the Portland Hotel and Pioneer Courthouse. This image comes from the souvenir picture book, Portland, Oregon, the Rose City, 1915. The book dubs this image “The Heart of the City.”

Aerial View, SW Broadway, 1960

Interesting perspective in this photo looking straight down on SW Broadway as it cuts through the heart of downtown in 1960 (south is up). The parking lot just left of center will become Pioneer Courthouse Square a quarter-century later. Very few blocks have escaped change in the last 50 years.

SW Morrison & 5th, 1907

Portland appeared to be a busy, progressive and prosperous city in this 1907 street scene looking west on SW Morrison at 5th Avenue. Pioneer Courthouse is on the immediate left and the Portland Hotel, site of today’s Pioneer Courthouse Square, looms in the distance beyond that. Meier & Frank would build their flagship store on the block to the immediate right.
