Ross Island Bridge Aerial, 1950

Another fantastic top-down image, this time of the area south of downtown around the Ross Island Bridge. The west side waterfront was highly industrialized in 1950, and the I-5 freeway had not come through this area yet. Lots of great detail in this photo, from the Brooklyn neighborhood to Pill Hill.

Portland Panorama, c1880

In a discussion of Marquam Hill/Robinson’s Hill last week, Edmund linked to this terrific stereoscope image which begged its own feature. The view looks north up present-day SW 10th Avenue circa 1880, pre-dating the Old Church which would be directly ahead. I believe the vantage point of this image is the top of the steep slope at the end of 10th, just south of Clifton Street. Interestingly, there is an old brick reservoir gate house there still, and the construction we see here at extreme bottom left may be part of that reservoir.

Marquam Hill, 1920

This 1920 photo looks west towards Marquam Hill over what will become Duniway Park. Several of the houses along the upper road, SW Broadway Drive, are still there, while everything along the bottom street, SW 6th/Terwilliger Blvd, is gone (compare with this photo). I believe the nearest building on the far right (with the arched window) sits in the northwest corner of the future Duniway Park. We’ve seen photos of the work to fill this gully here and here. Lair Hill is probably on the left foreground.
