Mocks Bottom Barracks, circa 1945

An aerial view of Mocks Bottom barracks and the area near N Willamette Boulevard, N Killingsworth Street and N Greeley Avenue, circa 1945. Notice the building at the northeast corner of N Greeley Avenue and N Killingsworth Street – it was designed to accommodate the curve needed for the streetcar route. This route was no longer in use by the time this photo was taken, and the Bess Kaiser Hospital had not yet been built.

Portland Community College Cascade Campus, circa 1969

Here we have an excellent aerial of what is now Portland Community College’s Cascade Campus located on N Killingsworth Street. The school began as a small Christian College which transferred its holdings to the entity that created PCC. The campus has transformed and expanded over the years since this photograph was taken, circa 1969. In the lower left corner you can see the Jefferson High School football field, and to the right of the field, the Multnomah County Library North Portland branch. In the upper left of the image you can see Ockley Green School and the defunct streetcar barns near N Jessup. In the upper right you can see the Peninsula Park Rose Garden.

NE 42nd & Killingsworth, 1958

Looking north on NE 42nd at Killingsworth seemed like a sleepy little corner back in 1958. The wholesale/retail store on the right is now a giant parking lot and the Chevron station on the left has been replaced by another building a bit farther from the corner. That security light and metal post holding the Chevron sign might still be there though, rusty but still standing.

NE Killingsworth & 30th, 1954

Add some color and a few newer cars to this photo and it wouldn’t look much different today. This view west on NE Killingsworth at 30th Avenue has many different signs but the basics are still there.
