Used to walk this way to Fernwood grade school in the 40s and 50s.
I wonder if they had protests and petitions or if it was welcomed in the name of progress?
Great vintage photo…
Sidewalk on North (left) looks new. some have chosen to put up retaining wall, other have fairly new cuts. The tree plantings are new.
A lot of front yard lost to progress. Imagine if your city wanted wanted to snatch 15 feet of your lawn, bushes, trees and driveway.
Nice comparison to the before
widening photo last week ~
The elimination of the telephone poles/power lines on the N. side of Broadway though!.. compare it to last weeks 1930 circa shot.. a difference a year can make.. amazing..
guy on the right is thinking that losing a tree (magnolia?) is not compensated for by planting a telephone pole.
they managed to shave maybe a foot of the south side of the street – interesting that they made such a large concrete pour for such a small gain (you can see the line between new and old pavement on both sides of street).
