John, I think this is the view. The photo above is looking at the northeast corner of 3rd and Columbia.
Isn’t that near where Cafe Espresso used to be and Boyd’s Coffee across the street? I know they were still around at least til ’67 but I can’t remember exactly where after all these years.
The Sherman Hotel-family friends lived here. Like many Japanese families after the war, similar hotels were managed by this community. There was a Japanese hotel association.
That kind of architecture hung on a few blocks north, after the Civic Auditorium area was demolished. Strange to think of it, but a lot of downtown into the 80’s was little 3-storey quarter blocks like this.
