Street debris after the Columbus Day Storm, 1962. Can anyone tell us the location of this photograph?

  1. I think this is looking north on SW 12th Ave with the Fruit & Flower Day Nursery, the brick building on the left.

  2. I think the photo is in NE Atlanta near Grant High.
I recognize the front of the Apartment and the Church steeple in the background.
But I haven’t been to that street likely in 50 years.

  3. This is where I work!
It is the 1928 building built for the Fruit & Flower Day Nursery on S.W. 12th and Market.
It is now the Helen Gordon Child Development Center, part of Portland State University.
Thank you for posting this photo!

  4. This is a view of the Fruit and Flower Nursery. Looking north by northwest. Had many good memories like the grandfather clock in the entrance.

  5. Tom is correct too. Previously it was the Fruit and Flower Day Nursery. My office was on the second floor of a Victorian house on the southeast corner of the intersection. I shared office space from 1962-1964 with Saul Zaik and Don Blair, both significant mid-century Portland architects. That house was demolished in the 1960s
to provide more space for Portland State University expansion. It remains vacant.

  6. Only a question because I was in McMinnville on that day.
The picture shows a rise in the street or you could say a hill, but the mao pictures I see none of this. I seem to remember that the brick bldg had something from the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh in it. Yes, I attended PSU.

  7. Ron,

I think you’re thinking of the Marsha Washington Hotel on 11th Avenue. It was briefly known as the Hotel Rajneesh. Other than that, the only other Rajneeshee establishment I can remember in Portland was the Zorba the Buddha restaurant.

  8. Downtown near an asian church. It appears there are Chinese charectors on a sign back there

    Sent from my iPad

  9. Looks like the old Fruit and Flower daycare front left and Unitarian Church in background. Broadway at around Columbia?
