Help Us Out!

Can anyone identify the neighborhood in the aerial? The image is from 1960.

  1. I don’t know, but …

A couple of hints lead me to a possible location. It is not on a grid suggesting the topography is at least partly on a hillside.

It has both large and some very large homes that appear to date from the early 1920’s and 3O’s with wide parking strips and large street trees. An upper middle class neighborhood.

All this reminds me of the Alameda Ridge just north above Irvington.

    Just a guess.

  2. I think the City Auditor needs to reclassify this photo.
It’s currently: “Memorial Coliseum : Dedication book”
That’s probably a stretch for Laurelhurst.

  3. you could very well be correct. If you follow Oregon St. west to 22nd Ave. the only buildings in that area that are still standing are: Davidson’s Bakery, Wilson’s Warehouse, and Par-T-Pac beverage company. Look close and you will see a grayish colored roof on a house facing 22nd, It is sandwiched between buildings on the North an south. The building on the North is West Coast pictures. I lived in that house from about 1950-thru 1963. Walked from there to Buckman grade school and Washington High school.

  4. It is definitely the Laurelhurst district. I lived about 11 blocks west of there off Sandy blvd. before the freeway was built, and before channel 2 came in. The area has grown so much, it used to be basic residential, now is a mixture of everything.

  5. Laura Parisi:
To get a short URL in Google Maps, click the three little dots on the ride side of the gray box in the top left corner. Choose “Share or Embed Image” and click the “Short URL” check box.

Click the Embed Image tag, copy and paste the URL into the Vintage Portland comment box and you’ll have a mini-map in your comment.

  6. Yes it is located at the north eastern edge of the Laurelhurst District at NE Peerless and NE Multnomah and NE 33rd. The photo is taken looking south east
