  1. Discussed this photo on another site. The car upholsterer sign is interesting. Car camping was very popular at the time. I assume the text ” Sleep in your car we cut them down for beds ” is referring to auto camping.

  2. If I was Hazelwood I wouldn’t be to happy about that awning blocking my advertisment. One of the largest auto camps in Port. was located west of Peninsula park.

  3. Thank you, PARC staff, for including in the post a link to the description of the Number Man! I assume it will be easy to cut and paste it into future posts that reference Number Men (or Women, if they existed). You’ll save countless electrons as we avoid multiple threads explaining the Number Man to new visitors.

  4. Yup, that building at 4008 is still the same. It has a storied history – including surviving a bombing in the early 1970s by an anti-war protester, when the building held a military recruiting center.

The black history mural on the north side of the building is slated for fixing up soon.

  5. Since the street was widened in 1930-31, the building at (now) 4008 would have to have been moved back from the curbside at that time, based on this photo.

  6. A two sentence post, one of which requires explanation and the other is entirely explanation. Looks like it’s time for this blog to have a FAQ: “Union Avenue? Number Man? Great Renumbering? Click here.”

  7. HOME! 25 years working on Williams and shaver and walked by this lot thousands of times on my lunch walks… Got tired Quikly of the SE eyesore corner…. we had pics of this building at shepler
