  1. The street where 7th dead ends is now SE Division. But there used to be about half a dozen curb stamps on that diagonal section of Division that indicated it was Union Avenue at some point.

    My guess is that Union curved up to SE 12th /Milwaukie because it was the route to 99 south.

    There were sloughs in that area which may have also made the detour necessary.

  2. The matching Poulsen brothers homes are both visible. Very cool indeed. The piles of wood are from their sawmills. Excellent ‘near end of the Depression’ photo with the gentleman and his dog pondering life’s mysteries. Wonderful in every sense of the word.

  3. makes sense about union angling of to 12/milwaukie as there was no 99E before 1935-1936. milwaukie ave was route to milwaukie and from there it would have been either river rd or oatfield rd to oregon city. hwy 99 followed macadam ave s through lake oswego and crossed the willamette at oregon city over the 1922 bridge.

  4. jon, I’d bet 7th was used as a bypass before 99e to avoid union/grand traffic as it used to connect directly to sandy blvd at 12th and sandy/us30 was main hwy for points east

    There are a couple Vintage Portland posts that show SE 7th before it was widened. No word on why it was widened, however.

  7. If this is looking south, is the house behind the pole with one crossbar, the one that sits just above McLoughlin Blvd at the end of the Ross Island bridge?
