  1. My wild guess for the day would be Sheridan…and the name street one block North would be Caruthers. It’s only because of the two house fronts that are on what I believe to be Caruthers look so familiar…driving down Barbur, towards town, and hanging a left onto Caruthers and then up a few blocks to 4th…hang a right and drive right down into the center of town!

  2. I think that is a very good guess based on the undulating roadway and the fall off of the land to the east, which I am speculating is toward the river.

  3. I think you guys are spot-on. Amazingly quick ID, as usual. The building being used as a Powers Furniture billboard in the 1931 photo is still being used as a billboard in 1938, but I can’t tell what’s being advertised.

  4. Oops, I take that back. I think the Powers Furniture billboard building is on the SW corner of 1st & Sheridan. That puts the camera about mid-block on 1st, between Sheridan and Arthur – abut where the street car is shown.

  5. re: looking from the SE corner of SW 1st and Arthur

The building with the Powers Furniture billboard in this post has two arched windows next to a two-storey bay window, matching the building at the far right of the frame in Vintage Portland post https://vintageportland.wordpress.com/2015/11/09/gem-hotel-circa-1918/.

Vintage Portland post https://vintageportland.wordpress.com/2015/04/23/sw-1st-avenue-1959/ shows this same building looking southwest from Sheridan at 1st, and gives the address as 2513 SW Sheridan.

  6. This photo was shot looking north from Arthur on 1st ave. The building that the Powers Furniture ad is attached to is the old Southern Hotel at 2513 S W 1st Ave..The ad on the hotel is for Bull Durham tobacco. I lived in that hotel as a child. Now 83 yrs old.
