N Larrabee Avenue and Albina Avenue, 1927

The Ideal Cafeteria was located at N Larrabee Ave. [N Interstate Ave] and Albina Ave. At the other end of the building you can see a sign for the Baxter Apartments.

  1. As near as I can tell from the wording over the entrance at the top of the structure, this building was apparently named the Albina.

It’s a shame it was torn down. If it had survived, this intersection would have been bounded by historic buildings.

  2. I no longer live in Portland, but several years ago I worked near this intersection and wondered what building used to be there. It is a shame that is was taken down. Or maybe it burned down? Does anyone know why the building is no longer there?

  3. I have not found a specified reason for the demise of this fine old building, but according to ads for used building materials (mainly lumber) in the Oregonian, it underwent demolition in February-March 1965.

  4. Richard: What a detective! Thanks very much for the information. I wish I could give you two thumbs up. Solving these puzzles is fun.
