SW 3rd Avenue, 1915

Today we have an image of the beautiful lighted arches that once lined 3rd Avenue in southwest Portland from 1915. This was known as the Great Light Way, which was erected in 1914. All the remnants of the Great Light Way have been removed.

  1. I believe this view is looking North from Third and Yamhill. I’ve seen several postcards from this vantage point. I wonder if this photo is the basis of those postcards.

  2. About what Jim is wondering, I found this at the Efiles link: “City Auditor – Archives & Records Management – Auditor’s Historical Records – Souvenir picture book : Portland, Oregon, the rose city” So, since it is part of a souvenir picture book, I will bet the photograph made it into being a postcard, too. What do y’all think?

  3. The buildings on the right are the extant Semler and Mohawk buildings. The cast iron fronted building on the left at the intersection with Morrison was the Cambridge Block.
