The luxurious Carlton Hotel opened on SW Washington at 14th in 1911. This 1917 view is to the southwest, looking at the 14th and Burnside corner. This building was demolished for the stadium freeway which today passes under Burnside at this point.
Another great photo. Thanks Dan. We can even see a portion of the old Portland High School in the background.
I had this confused with the hotel on SW Park and Alder. Trying to come up with the name also started witha C I believe.
By 1953 the Carlton was at least partly residential. In that year my sister and I went there for our weekly French lessons with Miss Gibson, who had a very nice apartment. And the Carlton coffee shop made a delicious pea soup.
