Aerial of Downtown, 1976

This 1976 aerial photo shows the downtown core area looking east centered on SW Alder. The cross street at the bottom is SW 11th Avenue. It’s instantly recognizable but greatly changed over the years.

  1. In the lower left corner is the clock tower of the Portland
Telegram Building. Across 11th from it is the painted sign advertising Dinihanian Carpets. The Dinihanian store is gone and Vinopolis wine merchants occupy that space now, but the Dinihanian sign is maintained in perfect condition. According to our family lore, one of my grandfathers went to work for the Dinihanians when he immigrated from Ireland in 1906. The Mark Spencer (formerly Nortonia) Hotel, which is just out of the picture to the left of the Telegram Building, is our pied-a-terre whenever we come to Portland so I get a good look at that sign each time.
