USS Philadelphia, 1939

It was perhaps Rose Festival Fleet Week that brought the USS Philadelphia to Portland in 1939. The light cruiser is tied up along the seawall at the foot of SW Salmon St. in front of the old Public Market building.

  1. Can’t be Rose Festival week, since it’s not pouring down rain in this picture! 😉

  2. Oh, look at the large-sized version of the photo, please, because you do not want to miss the dinghy with three sailors maneuvering about 15 feet or so away from the ship. And if you look closely, you’ll see a few more sailors on deck.

  3. The building looked a lot better with its Public Market towers. Those look like lights at the top. When the Journal took over the building they covered them up. There’s that natural gas storage tank again.
