Front Avenue Sewer Construction, 1928

As part of Portland’s construction of the seawall along the river, an interceptor sewer project was undertaken. This 1928 photo shows sewer work along Front Avenue just south of the Burnside Bridge. The building beyond the bridge to the left is the recently restored White Stag Building, built in 1907. The other buildings on the left are gone, and where the row of buildings on the right once stood is now the northbound lanes of Naito Parkway. Here’s the Google Street View today.

  2. No, it’s Naito looking north. Note how the bridge ramp inclines up to the right? That puts the bridge on the right, so we’re on the south side.

  3. Rather late to this debate, but of course Dan Davis and Ian are absolutely right that it’s Naito/Front, not 1st. You can see this from this photo as well (which as noted in the comments is not from 1935 as the building on the immediate left in the photo above was demolished in 1939 and is already gone in the photo in the link).

    Note the “White Stag” building just north of the bridge matches the photo above, the extra column in the middle of 1st (still there today separating the MAX tracks) and note that the tracks on Front curve slightly to the west as in the photo above, while the tracks on 1st curve to the east before passing the Skidmore fountain.

  4. One minor nit to pick.

    The Dekum & Reed block was not entirely demolished in 1939. I believe it was whittled away over time starting with the construction of the current Burnside Bridge, and ending with the destruction of the final 50/200 foot section in a mysterious explosion detailed here.

    I would welcome any nits picked by others to correct any misinformation I have included in my comment. I’m not entirely sure about whether a smaller section of the block was removed to accomodate the new bridge or of the specific dimensions of the remaining “Helm” building.
