Downtown Parking Lot

How would you like to get your hands on some of these almost new 1957 and 1958 Chevrolets and Dodges? What do you suppose this parking lot is for? The cars seem too uniform to be a public lot. This is taken in 1958 from City Hall looking at SW 5th between Madison and Main at the far end of the block (Multnomah County Courthouse is across the street). The Portland Building sits on this lot now.

  1. I think this lot is the Multnomah County Motor Pool. Before the county got much larger and need more courtrooms, much of the county administration was based in the courthouse. My father worked in the Planning Department which for a time was located in a small building on this block that fronted on 4th, which I recollect they shared with the motor pool.

Think of this as the 1958 equivalent to the county motor pool lot between the ramps of the west end of the Morrison Bridge. That would explain the uniformity of cars and the tight parking job.

  2. So we’re looking north on SW 5th? Is hat a street that the bus seems to be turning right onto? I can’t place that street at all in my memory of how it looks today, unless that is SW Salmon and the bus is heading west onto it. Actually, how could that be SW Salmon? The distance between Main and whatever it is appears too short to be a block, doesn’t it? What do you think, please? Thanks!

  3. Thanks for your information. I am having a perfect blast looking at all of these posts and others about Portland’s history. I just want to know how to get hold of the vintage photos so that I can post them on my blog, alongside photos of the same or similar view/spot today. I don’t want to break any copyright laws, so I am not sure how to proceed. I have a lot of fun with my blog, Portland Oregon Daily Photo, no matter what.

  4. I’d like to see more photos of the exterior of McElroy’s. My dad played there in the 1930s and 1940s.
