A newly-opened I-5 freeway cuts a wide swath through North Portland in this 1964 photo looking northwest. NE Weidler and Broadway go east-west, while N Williams, Vancouver and Flint cross north-south over the freeway.

Friday night and this city is jumping! Looking north on SW Broadway toward SW Madison, Portland’s brightly lit theater signs are on display; Paramount, Broadway, Orpheum, and Mayfair.

In better days, the Multnomah Block from yesterday’s post looked like this (white building on the right). This view west on SW Morrison at 18th shows the Multnomah Block as a tidy “Burnett Automotive City” selling pre-war Plymouths and De Sotos. Familiar landmarks include Civic Stadium across Morrison and the Kingston Hotel just up the street.
