Eastbank Freeway Construction, 1962

June 8, 2012

This nifty aerial view shows the I-5 Eastbank Freeway construction through inner North  and Northeast Portland in 1962. In the upper right corner are NE Weidler and Broadway going east-west and Vancouver Avenue snaking across the construction on a temporary overpass. This view is to the southeast and another view of the same area can be seen here.

W.M. Killingsworth Home, c1910

February 9, 2012

Real estate businessman W.M. Killingsworth platted the Walnut Park addition to Portland in 1905. 80 acres were divided into 400 lots and deeds stated only residential buildings would be built. He built this fine home for himself facing N Alberta Street between N Vancouver and Commercial Avenues, and extended north past Sumner Street. Thanks to VP fan Roxanne for suggesting this image.

Wonder Bread has been available to generations of Portlanders as this 1937 advertisement on N. Vancouver Avenue attests. The view is east on Fremont Street.

N Vancouver & Fremont, 1937

October 25, 2011

Richfield and Gilmore service stations once adroned two of the corners at N. Vancouver Ave. and Fremont Street. I wonder if Webb’s “The Tavern” was actually in the Richfield station.
