Engine 3 Crew, c1913

The Engine 3 crew displays fine looking equipment and horses in front of their fire station circa 1913. Engine Co. 3 was then at 510 Washington Street, which is now the south side of Washington between 15th and 16th.

according to this document (page 12) the station was at 1440 SW Washington when this photo was taken.

Lee, the old address before the street renumbering in the 30’s was 510 Washington Street. That address is listed parenthetically next to the 1440 SW Washington address in the document you linked presumably to show that the original address was 510 Washington before the renumbering.

However, having said all that, the official City of Portland renumbering document says that 510 Washington Street became 1540 W Burnside after the renumbering.

  3. Brian Says:

Looking at it now, I see that is where Washington merges with Burnside. West of that merger used to be Washington before it became Burnside with the renumbering. It looks like the location is today the Virgina Woof Dog Daycare at 1520 SW Burnside. That building has a corrugated metal front covering it so I wonder if it could be the original building? Maybe someone could check to see when that building was built.

Horses seem awake, but by the looks on their faces, the must have been up all night fighting a fire…..

  5. Jim Says:

According to Portland Maps, the current building on that site dates to 1938. Ironically, given the site’s history, one of the historic permits, dating to 2004, deals with an alteration request. Part of the reason for the request: “the partition that divides the empty tenant space and the parking garage to the south is comprised of a hodge podge of materials that utterly fails to achieve any fire separation.”

  6. Tom Jones Says:

According to Wikipedia: Hodge-podge is a word used to describe a confused or disorderly mass or collection of things; a “mess” or a “jumble”.[

  7. Tad Says:

Nice looking boiler. I wonder how long it took to get the steam up in order to fight the fire? Or maybe they kept it hot 24/7?

  8. Chris Says:

Notice the bed frames in the 2nd floor windows.
