SW 4th Avenue, 1973

Two views from almost identical spots atop City Hall on SW 4th Avenue between Jefferson and Madison show the block across the street before and after clearing in 1973. The block is now Terry Schrunk Plaza, named for Portland’s mayor from 1957 to 1973.

Those people parked on the City Hall walk. They must have just drove over the curb and steps to park there? There are even marked spots!

That must’ve been a parking lot before Portland’s “green” era. That could be Mildred Schwab’s car!

Is there a public landmark dedicated to Big Jim?

    Brian,

    Maybe the Ground Kontrol barcade?

There was parking on the east side of City Hall until about 15 years ago. There was a driveway on the north side that led to this area. I think it was during Mayor Katz’s administration that they closed off the parking there, and rebuilt the balustrade on the north side.
