RL Glisan’s Building, 1914

R.L. Glisan’s Building, constructed in 1914 on the northeast corner of NW 5th and Couch, was probably a handsome building in its day. It’s not known when it was demolished but that corner could use a little its charm today.

So – GLEEsan or GLISSsan? I’ve heard both from old timers (including someone who claimed to be a relative vouching for ‘glisten’). I hear most people pronounce it Gleesan these days.

Maybe I’ll go ask Old Man Soovie! LOL!

The rule of thumb for pronunciation should be “the correct pronunciation is the way most natives pronounce it.” By that rule, it’s “Gleeson”. Same for “Coouch” (Couch)..

According to this link, it looks like the building was still extant as of 1965.
