US Custom House, 1904

Since its opening in 1901 the US Custom House on NW 8th Avenue between Everett and Davis Streets has been home to the US Customs Service and the US Army Corps of Engineers. It’s currently the site of the police headquarters in the TV program “Grimm.” The building recently sold at auction with future plans for the building not announced. The streets appear to still be unpaved in this 1904 image.

I hope it was sold with iron-clad strictures denying permission to tear it down! When I lived at NW 22nd and Everett, I used to walk by it on my way to catch a bus the rest of the way to work, back when the Transit Mall was being reworked. Getting to see interior shots on “Grimm” is the icing on the cake!

This was also the police headquarters in the movie Gone

I spent a lot of time there in the late 60’s & early 70’s when I worked for a local custom brokerage firm…lots of good memories of that building and of the people who worked there. I’ll never forget Lillian Montecarlo…she was one tough broad! A daily routine of going to the customs house at least twice a day and then down to the terminals & various docks…this was before anyone had even heard of container ships! Then everything changed. The first container ship that entered Portland was The Golden Arrow. Everyone in the office was a little apprehensive about the concept of containers and they thought that the concept of “container shipping” would change the entire shipping industry forever…boy, they sure were right!

The Grimm police headquarters are on a sound set a couple miles from there. Maybe this building was used in the pilot?

  5. Scott Tice Says:

They did some interior Grimm shots there. Not sure which. I went in and toured it a few months ago when the GSA was selling it. There were decals still up on the wall from the Grimm shoots.
