Swan Island Airport

Construction began on Portland’s main airport in 1926 and was officially known as Portland Airport. The site of the present airport was purchased in 1936 and completed in 1940.

    Swan Island, airport in the thirties, shipyard in the forties and now warehouses and dry docks..

    My dad pulled guard duty there during WW2 at night, and produced lenses for the Nordem Bomb sights during the day. I don’t know when he slept.
